No Heat Affected Zone with Waterjet Cutters

First, you must understand that no heat affected zone does not mean no heat at all. However, waterjet cutting does not create a heat affected zone. The pressurized water would become steam if it were going to be hot, but its temperature is stable, capable of carrying the abrasive to cut through materials.

The temperature of the cutting machine’s water is stable because the reservoir is huge enough. The continuous supply of stable-temperature water that is applied to the metal being cut would regulate the material’s temperature even with the heat created by the abrasive cutting action and the pressurizing of the water. After the material is cut, you can still feel by the touch that the waterjet cutting area is a little bit warm.

That being said, a waterjet part could still become warm to the touch after being cut.

Waterjet cutting machines are quite versatile, making them ideal cutters for almost any type of material. It can be used to cut glass, stone, plastics, rubbers, tiles, and so on. With its precision and swiftness, waterjet cutters are the most preferred CNC machine in many industries. It is cost-effective and a very efficient cutting method. With waterjet cutters, you can expect that there is no damage, no change chemical or mechanical change of the material, no burnt edges, and no heat affected zone.

What is Heat Affected Zone?

Other cutting method such as thermal and mechanical cutting processes can produce substantial heat, which causes some chemical and mechanical changes to the metal being cut. The heat-generating process that is localized or concentrated in one area where it is cut creates what is known as the heat affected zone. A waterjet cutter, on the other hand will not do this. Thermal cutting technology includes plasma, laser, and torch. Example of mechanical cutting methods are saw cutting, machining, and shear. The thermal and mechanical cutting methods, however, can also be useful in other applications.

Waterjet cutting vs other cutting methods

If you are dealing with preparation of metallurgical evaluation processes and cross-section analysis, then you should use waterjet cutting machines. Unlike other cutting methods, waterjet technology will not change the properties of the material, and will not give any stress to the material. It has been proven that the solidity and material structure of waterjet cut hardened tool steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and other metals are not affected by the use of water jet cutting.

Waterjet cutting techniques

Waterjet cutting techniques can be applied to all sorts of materials, steel, hard or tool steel, stainless-steel, rubbers, castings, combination, components, developing, unique components, laminated flooring surfaces, heated delicate elements, and synthetic materials that may produce harmful and toxic gases while being cut using other methods produce heat affected zone. Waterjet cutting machineries can accomplish all of these tasks without affecting their properties and the qualities of the content. This also makes these machines ideal for the aerospace industry.
